We took a Tuk Tuk all the way from our hotel to the foot of Mandalay Hill. We left our shoes at the entrance and paid a small fee to enter.
Mandalay Hill is a must-see if you are visiting Mandalay. There are some amazing views across Mandalay from the top of the hill and the Sutaungpyei Pagoda is a stunningly beautiful building that rests atop the hill and glistens in the evening sun.
It really is a beautiful place to sit or walk around. There weren’t many Westerners up there so we were getting lots of people coming to speak to us; mainly to practice their English or have their picture taken with us (which I still find a bit odd but nice in a way). I’ve always found that in places like this, people are generally curious about you and also very appreciative of the fact that you have taken an interest in a culture other than your own.
Well worth the effort to go there and climb the hill. Try and coordinate your summit with the sunset – you won’t regret it.
