Gion is an absolute must-see if you’re visiting Kyoto. Although we only had a couple of days in the city, it was easy to see why so many travellers are drawn to this historic district. There’s so much to do and explore that we’re already hoping to return one day.
During our visit, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some Geisha, which made the trip particularly memorable. Seeing them in their traditional clothing, hair, and makeup is truly a spectacle, a living reminder of Japan’s cultural heritage. That said, it was disheartening to see how often they were surrounded by tourists, with cameras and smartphones pushed close for photos. While it’s understandable that visitors are excited to capture the moment, a bit more respect for their personal space would make the experience better for everyone.

Beyond the chance to spot Geisha, Gion itself is a beautiful and fascinating area to explore. Its streets are lined with traditional architecture, quaint shops, and some of the best restaurants in Japan, making it a perfect place to wander and soak up the atmosphere. If you’re in Kyoto, it’s well worth making the effort to visit Gion and experience its unique blend of history, culture, and culinary delights.

Gion

The Kamo River.

These aren’t Geisha but three ladies wearing traditional Japanese kimono. I didn’t really want to shove my camera in their faces so I took the pic from behind.

Wandering around the back streets.

The rear of some very snazzy restaurants.
