Kakku Pagodas, Myanmar | 2011

In 2011, we spent an unforgettable afternoon exploring the Kakku Pagodas, perched in the hills overlooking the valley southeast of Inle Lake, Myanmar. The site, a stunning collection of over 2,000 ancient stupas, had only recently opened to tourists at the time, so visiting felt like a rare privilege.

Walking among the pagodas, it’s impossible not to be struck by the sheer scale and intricate detail of each structure. Carved with care, many of the stupas are adorned with bells and chimes that catch the slightest breeze. When the wind blows, the gentle ringing fills the air, creating a serene and almost magical atmosphere that perfectly complements the surrounding landscape.

The location itself adds to the sense of wonder, rolling hills, lush greenery, and views over the distant valley make Kakku a place where history and nature converge beautifully. Visiting the pagodas offers not only a glimpse into Myanmar’s rich cultural and religious heritage, but also a peaceful and contemplative experience that stays with you long after you leave.
