Checkpoint Charlie remains one of the city’s most recognisable Cold War landmarks. This former border crossing between East and West Berlin was the setting for tense standoffs and daring escapes, quickly becoming a symbol of a divided city.
Situated on Friedrichstraße, it was the only crossing point for foreigners and Allied personnel during Berlin’s division. The site witnessed some of the era’s most dramatic moments, including the 1961 tank confrontation between American and Soviet forces.

Today, a replica guardhouse marks the location, while the nearby museum shares the stories of those who risked everything to flee from East to West. Visiting Checkpoint Charlie offers a poignant glimpse into Berlin’s turbulent past and the remarkable human courage that arose from it.
