Āgenskalna Tirgus Food Market, Riga, Latvia

Located across the River Daugava in the leafy district of Āgenskalns, Āgenskalna Tirgus (Āgenskalns Market) is one of Riga’s most vibrant and historic markets, a place where tradition and modern food culture meet in perfect balance.

The market first opened in 1898 and has long served as the heart of the local community. After a major restoration in recent years, it’s now a beautiful blend of old and new: the striking red-brick building retains its original early 20th-century charm, while inside you’ll find a bright, open space filled with local farmers, food producers, and small independent eateries.

This is where you come to experience Riga’s culinary character up close. Stalls overflow with seasonal produce, freshly baked bread, handmade cheeses, smoked fish, honey, and regional specialities. The upstairs area hosts a variety of modern food stands offering everything from contemporary Latvian dishes to international street food, perfect for lunch or a relaxed evening meal.

What makes Āgenskalna Tirgus particularly special is its atmosphere. It’s not just a place to shop or eat, but a social hub, where locals gather for weekend brunch, live music, and cultural events. On warm days, the outdoor terraces are full of people enjoying coffee or craft beer under the trees, creating a laid-back, neighbourhood feel that contrasts beautifully with the bustle of central Riga.

Travel Tip:

The market is easy to reach from Old Town, just a short tram ride across the river and well worth the trip. It took us about 30 minutes from the town to get there. Visit in the late morning when everything is in full swing, and plan to stay for lunch to sample the local flavours. Afterwards, take a stroll around Āgenskalns itself, one of Riga’s most characterful districts, known for its wooden architecture and relaxed, residential charm
