What Machu Picchu, Peru Was Like Back In 2011

We visited Machu Picchu, Peru, on Valentine’s Day back in 2011 during our year-long round-the-world adventure, which included an incredible journey across South America.

Nothing quite prepares you for the first glimpse of Machu Picchu, it’s every bit as breathtaking as you imagine, and even more so in person. Perched high in the Andes, this ancient Incan citadel is wrapped in mist and mystery, with archaeologists still debating its true purpose.

We spent the entire day exploring the ruins, soaking up the atmosphere and marvelling at the scale of the site. What made it even more special was how quiet it was, hardly any other visitors were around. It felt like stepping back in time. A true travel bucket-list moment and a day I’ll never forget.
