We visited the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar back in 2011, and it remains one of the most unforgettable sites we’ve ever experienced. This iconic pagoda, along with the surrounding complex of smaller temples, shrines, and statues, exudes an incredible sense of atmosphere and reverence that’s hard to find anywhere else.
The pagoda itself soars 99 metres into the sky, its surface covered in gleaming gold plates that catch the sunlight, while the spire at the very top is encrusted with diamonds, creating a dazzling spectacle visible from across the city. Walking through the complex, we spent hours simply taking it all in, observing worshippers performing rituals, lighting candles, and leaving offerings, and absorbing the intricate details of the architecture and decorations that adorn every corner.
Shwedagon Pagoda is Myanmar’s most important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, and visiting it gives a real sense of the spiritual and cultural heart of the country. Beyond its religious significance, it’s also a place of beauty, history, and serenity, where the scale and craftsmanship are truly awe-inspiring. Experiencing Shwedagon in person is something I can’t recommend highly enough — it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression long after you’ve left..
