We stayed in the beautiful city of Pokhara, often referred to as the gateway to the Himalayas, for a few nights in 2011 to acclimatize before embarking on our incredible 10-day trek to Annapurna Base Camp. Pokhara is the perfect blend of natural beauty, vibrant local life, and laid-back charm, making it an ideal place to prepare for the challenges ahead.
The city has plenty to see and do, with the stunning Phewa Lake right next to our hotel. We spent a couple of leisurely hours strolling along its shores, taking in the calm waters and the reflections of the surrounding mountains. On one day, we hired a boat and spent a few hours exploring the lake from the water, which was a peaceful and refreshing way to experience the scenery.
Pokhara is also home to bustling markets, quaint cafes, and scenic viewpoints, providing plenty of opportunities to soak up the atmosphere and sample local life. It’s a wonderful place to relax, enjoy the Himalayan vistas, and mentally prepare for a trek that is both physically demanding and utterly rewarding. Spending time in Pokhara before heading to Annapurna Base Camp added an extra layer of enjoyment to our journey and left us with lasting memories of this charming city.
