Swayambhunath Monkey Temple, Kathmandu, Nepal | 2011

We visited the Swayambhunath Monkey Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal, back in 2011, just before heading off to Pokhara to begin our trek to the Annapurna Base Camp in the Himalayas. Known locally as the “Monkey Temple” due to the large population of mischievous monkeys that roam the site, it proved to be a truly memorable stop.

The temple complex sits atop a hill overlooking Kathmandu, offering stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding valley. Walking through the site, we were surrounded by ancient stupas, prayer wheels, and intricately carved shrines, each filled with layers of history and spiritual significance.

Of course, the monkeys added a chaotic and entertaining element to the visit. They darted around the terraces, stole bits of food, and generally caused mayhem, making it impossible not to be both amused and cautious. Despite their antics, the temple retains a serene and sacred atmosphere, and observing the monks, worshippers, and visitors going about their rituals was fascinating.

Spending the afternoon at Swayambhunath was an unforgettable experience, perfectly blending Nepal’s rich history, spirituality, and vibrant wildlife, a lively yet peaceful introduction to the country before our Himalayan adventure
