About the hotel
We spent our wedding night here after driving many hours through the desert from Vegas.
The hotel itself is steeped in history. The Mizpah originally opened in 1907 and was sympathetically restored to it’s former glory and reopened in 2011.
The hotel is situated in the old mining town of Tonopah which was once the home of Wyatt Earp and is currently the home of the Tonopah Missile Test Range.
The Mizpah is also meant to be one of the most haunted hotels in America. In fact the ‘Ghost Adventures’ team once filmed an episode here. We didn’t experience any ghostly goings on though.
If you want a taste of what is was like back in the gold rush / wild west days then this is the hotel for you.
The Mizpah Hotel certainly has a lot of character.
The very comfortable hand-carved wagon bed.
The Mizpah Hotel lobby/bar area.
A handful of slot machines in the lobby.
The reception area.
The carpeted elevator.
The entrance to the Pittman Cafe in the lobby.
We ate in the hotel’s award winning Pittman Cafe. Serena had the steak sandwich and fries and I had the pork chop and mashed potato. To be honest I was expecting a bigger pork chop (this is the USA after all) but washed down with a couple of Bud’s it was just enough to fill me up.
What we thought
We spent the night in the Wagon Suite which is an experience in itself; sleeping in a hand carved Wagon bed. The bed was comfortable and I recall having a good nights sleep.
The suite is large enough for two people not to get in each others way.
We thought the room and the hotel as a whole was a bit dark (in terms of lighting) but maybe that’s all part of the authentic atmosphere they are trying to create.
There is definitely an atmosphere to the place which I can’t quite put my finger on. I guess any hotel that has such a long and perhaps chequered history is going to have an atmosphere but this isn’t a negative thing. It’s one of the reasons why we wanted to come and stay here.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay it’s just a pity we didn’t get to stay longer.
Would we stay here again?
Yes, definitely. We’ve still got a lot of unfinished business in the US so I would love to come back and stay at the Mizpah and explore the town some more.
